Our Mission

Welcome to the Art Deck-O website, my name is Kelly Hanna.
I design and build decks, pergolas arbors, fences & other outdoor structures. My
personal mission is to bring craftsmanship back into the carpentry business, something sadly missing
from today's companies. Everything we build for you is designed and constructed as if it were my own
with careful thought along the way to insure your satisfaction.

We offer the services described below at a very reasonable rate...less expensive than most other
contractors because we have no overhead. I own my tools and truck outright and owe nothing on any of them.
You aren't paying for a new truck or a crew that can't communicate with you when the boss is gone.
You are getting the craftsman first hand and saving money at the same time!

I personally handle all phases of your project from design to
finish out. I work from your design or mine, working from drawings or building from a verbal idea.
I do all the work with the help of Vern Hawkins. We take the time to make sure that everything
is done right the first time.

Once your project begins, all materials are hand picked and delivered by me...saving you from expensive
delivery fees and sub standard materials.  Each single piece of wood I use is chosen this way to
insure nothing but the best stock for milling. All framing is built from the finest pressure treated pine available
[Pro Wood], which has proven to be the most stable treated product in existance today.
Decking can be chosen from several domestic and exotic woods.

As the build progresses, we clean & organize the jobsite daily and never leave an
unsightly mess. We also take extra time to 'see' and build in artistic touches
along the way. First I envision what I would build if your house were mine, then add in what
your ideas and needs. Taking this approach always results in a much nicer project and
our clients being much happier with their project. We're always open to changes even in
the middle of a project...from time to time we even suggest them!

We only use stainless ring shanked full round head nails and stainless square drive
screws for connectors. No framing is ever toenailed, we only nail at 90 degrees to
insure full strength at each connection point. Key points also get 3" deck screws or
1/2" lag bolts or screws where necessary. Each deck or fence is built to code whether
or not a permit is required. Any time one is required, I handle all aspects of the
process for you including filing and inspection schedules.

Special care is taken to round off all sharp edges with a router so that no one gets a
splinter or a cut from a hard surface. This includes all pergola supports that extend above
deck level as well as benches, railings, etc. We can install the decking with either face screws or
hidden fasteners. Plenty of room is left for areas decked around trees or
plants to insure proper growth.

We recycle all old wood that is removed from your site and donate it to the wildlife center
for construction projects to aid in the rehabilitation of wild animals.

In short....we do the job right the first time, so that when we come back it's for another project!

The Owners

My wife's name is Jana Hanna....she gets a lot of comments about her name. She and I were married in 1997
and lived in Lakewood for 4 years and Lake Highlands for 3 years before moving to Terrell. We found a 105 year
old house [in 2005...it's 109 now] that was built in 1900 by a man who came from Tennessee in a covered wagon. He
built it for his daughter and her husband, then went back home. They lived in it for 73 years. The people
we bought the house from lived in it from 1973 til 2005, making us the third owners. We are well on our
way to making the home our own. We've painted every room in the house, planted 24 Pines and and
two Crepe Myrtals, changed the entire focus of the backyard to an outdoor living area complete with
4 smokers, a hot tub deck and a wine bar deck.

Future plans include 950 sq.ft. of additional decking, two full length pergolas across the back and sides
of the house. A lot of our materials for these projects have come from recycled materials including
600 sq. ft. of decking and the entire 320' fence run.

Our Hobbies

Jana has her own artistic outlet as you can see on her page on the site. She makes the most beautiful
floral window shadowboxes from old wooden windows. She hung two of them outside our back door, I told
her they would make great outdoor 'deck art'.

My hobby won't come as a shock to many....
I love woodworking and build a ton of things at home. Every year, my friends get
something new and unusual for Christmas. One year it was Cedar log cabin birdhouses, the next,
exotic wood wind chimes. I also love to work in our yard. I have so far increased our deck square
footage from 250 to over 900. I have a great workshop in the back yard which I plan to add on to this year.

Our favorite thing to do in our time off each spring and fall is going camping. Beaver's Bend is our favorite place,
Hot Springs, where we spent our honeymoon, is second, but the rest are right here in Texas. We have
been to Caddo Lake, Atlanta [Texas] State Park, Lake Whitney and a few others. We are going to try to visit
as many new parks in Texas as we can the next few years, mostly in the eastern quadrant.

Thanks for reading about our company and it's staff

The 2nd Mission...

I ran an ad on Craigslst for free wood I had reclaimed from a demolition and we met two people
who are really making a difference in wildlife rescue & rehabilitation.

Valeri & Mike Marler operate Cross Timbers Ranch in Terrell, Texas...home of The Crosstimbers
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Education Center. Their approach to wildlife and land
management is extremely unique and we've taken it upon ourselves to help in any way we can.
The plans are quite extensive for education, nature adventures and entertainment for all ages and
we're very excited to be able to help build one of the most unique ranches of our time.

I donate my time, materials, & tools to help build the facility to the master plan
Valeri and Mike have in mind for the ranch. If you would like more information, please visit the
Cross Timbers Ranch website. You can roll over the photos below for additional links to their site.

Thank you for visiting Art Deck-O, I look forward to meeting and working with you!
