I
have been restoring old furniture and building new pieces since 1972 as
a hobby.
My
first 2 projects were in shop class in high school and I have been a woodshop
enthusiast ever since. The first
thing
I built was a plaque for my father, I still have it today. My love of building
anything from wood
began
before shop class in my father's shop. He wasn't a carpenter, he was VP
of Piggly Wiggly, but he
loved
to tinker in the shop and fix things around the house. I became interested
in woodworking
so
I took shop class and the rest is history.
For
years, I have restored and refinished furniture pieces for clients who
asked if I knew anyone. I took these projects
on
during the weekends and between bigger jobs. My shop has always been on
the smaller side, but you might
be
amazed at the size of some of the projects I have built there!
One
of my most challenging projects is pictured below. One of my client's relatives
asked if I
could
rebuild her cedar armoire. I said of course thinking it just needed a little
work. I got to the house to
pick
it up and found 14-15 pieces of aromatic cedar in the driveway. It looked
like someone had tossed the armoire out
of
a truck going 50 mph or so. That piece took me 3 weeks of nights and weekends
to figure out where they all
went,
but I finally got it back together...I had to make three new pieces to
complete the armoire
but
they blended well after sanding.
Recently,
I decided to open the 'doors' to the shop as a full time service to help
us stay busy.
